Chloe Blackburn
Student Ambassador, George Washington University
Chloe Blackburn is a graduating senior at The George Washington University studying International Affairs with a concentration in Latin America and a minor in Africana Studies. Her interests lie within understanding the cultural, social and political realities of African descendants across North, Central and South America. Her work follows various theoretical and decolonial frameworks and research methodologies such as The Black Radical Tradition, Black Feminist Theory and Sentipensar. Chloe’s current research focuses on how Afro-Colombian women insurgents within the regions of Nariño and Cauca respond to and challenge the patriarchal structures within the insurgent groups they are a part of. This research seeks to understand how these Black women navigate and resist the systems in which they are embedded in, whether those efforts prove beneficial or not, to achieve liberation from patriarchy. Outside of studying, Chloe remains engaged on campus as the President of Alianza, GW's first Afro-Latine organization, and as a Student Ambassador to The GW Undergraduate Admissions Office. In her free time, she enjoys writing poetry, hosting her weekly WRGW radio show, Power Radio, and dancing samba for The Vavá United School Of Samba at the Brazilian American Cultural Center in DC.
The quote you return to when thinking about community, culture & inclusion
"And who will join this standing up and the ones who stood without sweet company will sing and sing back into the mountains and if necessary even under the sea we are the ones we have been waiting for" -June Jordan (Commemoration of the 40,000 women and children who, August 9, 1956, presented themselves in bodily protest against the “dompass” in the capital of apartheid. Presented at The United Nations, August 9, 1978.)
