Edward J. Balleisen

Provost Edward J. Balleisen is GW’s chief academic officer and oversees its 10 schools and colleges, institutes and museums, the research enterprise, multiple administrative units and all faculty. Prior to joining GW in July 2026, he served as senior vice provost for interdisciplinary programs and initiatives at Duke University. A historian, Provost Balleisen is an expert in the evolution of American capitalism and modern regulatory governance. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Princeton University and his master’s and doctoral degrees from Yale University.
